Vought Recognized for Being Good Corporate Citizen by Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County

Upgrades in wastewater pretreatment plant contributed to award

HAWTHORNE, CALIF., JULY 31, 2009 – Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc. announced today that it received a Certificate of Recognition by the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County for complying with U.S. EPA and county industrial wastewater discharge requirements for 2008.

Vought’s Hawthorne facility achieved the four criteria for this recognition by meeting its limits for wastewater discharge; being free from any notices of violations; maintaining its environmental equipment; and fulfilling its permit requirements.

“In the world of wastewater treatment, it is difficult to achieve these results,” said Larry Cragun, environmental engineer at the Hawthorne site. “We are pleased to be recognized with this award and for our effort to protect the environment and being a good corporate citizen.”

Vought cited upgrades to its wastewater pretreatment plant (PTP) as a contributing factor in being recognized. The company automated its treatment system sensors and instruments to have better control over the entire treatment process.

Since the upgrade, all instruments are displayed on the PTP operator’s desktop computer screen. This permits the operator to constantly monitor the status of the equipment and the process, allowing for quick reactions to any required process adjustments.

“The upgrade will help ensure our continued compliance with the discharge of all wastewaters, said Cragun. “We are determined to be a repeat winner when it comes to environmental compliance.”

The Certificates of Recognition program originated with the Sanitation Districts’ Industry Advisory Council, a group of 21 representatives from different industrial sectors. The Council and the Sanitation Districts felt it was important that industries with good compliance records be recognized. The recognition program is now in its thirteenth year.

This is Vought’s second time to receive the Certificate of Recognition. The Hawthorne site first earned this certificate in 2004.

Vought’s Hawthorne facility is located 12 miles south of downtown Los Angeles and five miles east of the Los Angeles International Airport.  Approximately 1,000 workers at the site fabricate and assemble panels for the Boeing 747-8 fuselage and the Boeing 767 aft body.
