STUART, FLA., MARCH 20, 2008 – Vought Aircraft Industries’ Stuart site has earned the company’s top safety award. During 2007, Vought’s Stuart site reduced its OSHA recordable injury rate by an impressive 35.6 percent. This reduction leads all sites.
David Squier, chairman of Vought’s Board of Directors, visited the Stuart facility today to present the Chairman’s Annual Safety Award, recognizing the team for being the most improved site for safety in 2007. He presented the award during an all-hands meeting.
“Safety is the single most difficult metric to change, for a variety of factors: environment, attitude and knowledge. Yet, it’s the metric with the biggest payback because safe sites are productive sites. They produce quality products and are profitable,” said Squier in presenting the award.
Site General Manager Paul Sandhu said, “At the end of the day, safety is not about numbers -- it’s about our employees. Keeping them safe is our top priority. Employees and management working together is the main reason for reduced injuries here. Credit for winning the Chairman’s Safety Award goes to Stuart site employees who worked together as a team to achieve such improvements. My personal thanks to all of our employees in Stuart for their focus on safety at work and at home.”
Vought’s Stuart facility opened in 1950 adjacent to Witham Field Airport. Today the site employs about 180 people who build large airframe structures for the Boeing 767, 777 and 747 commercial aircraft, and engine nacelles for the Gulfstream G450 and Hawker Beechcraft 800 business jets. The site also is a licensed FAA repair station for a number of business jet engine nacelles and Boeing fuselage doors.
