NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C., JULY 9, 2007 – Approximately 1,000 employees, executives, state leaders and their guests joined a worldwide celebration last night as Boeing unveiled its first 787 Dreamliner, the fastest-selling airplane in commercial aviation history. The rollout of the 787 on 7-8-07 was broadcast in nine languages to approximately 100 million viewers.
North Charleston, S.C., was one of several Boeing 787 partner locations from around the world to participate interactively during Boeing’s one-hour, worldwide live telecast event from Everett, Wash. The event was broadcasted to 80 remote sites in Asia, Europe and the United States.
In South Carolina, Vought produces the Dreamliner’s aft fuselage section. Global Aeronautica, a joint venture between Alenia North America and Vought, assembles and integrates more than 60 percent of the 787’s fuselage.
When the live broadcast turned to South Carolina, executives commented on the unprecedented partnerships that have formed around the globe to produce the 787. “We are a part of a revolution that will change the way the world travels,” said Vincenzo Caiazzo, Chief Operating Officer, Alenia North America and Chairman, Global Aeronautica. “We are shaping the aircraft of the future as well as innovative industrial relationships.”
“We’re building an aircraft in a way that’s never been done before,” said Elmer Doty, Chief Executive Officer, Vought Aircraft Industries. “The 787 program is redefining the word ‘team,’ uniting the best players at every position in our industry.”
South Carolina Secretary of Commerce Joe Taylor preceded the ceremony with remarks about the importance of the 787 to the state’s economy.
The crowd then lifted cards that, when viewed as a whole, displayed names of the companies associated with 787 activities in South Carolina. On queue, the cards were flipped to reveal a picture of the Dreamliner with the message “the star of our show.”
