Vought Commemorates 100th Delivery of Wing Components for Airbus A340-600 Aircraft

NASHVILLE, FEB. 2, 2006 – Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc. is celebrating its 100th unit delivery of wing components for the Airbus A340-600 aircraft. Procurement and Quality department executives from Airbus in the United Kingdom attended the Jan. 11 event, thanking Vought employees for their contributions.

The company’s Nashville facility began working on the Airbus A340-600 in 1998. More than 75 employees work on the program today, building its mid- and outer leading edge assemblies, upper panel and stringers, mid-rear spar, and center spar assembly. Over the years, Vought has accomplished several weight-saving modifications on these components for Airbus.

Vought is one of the largest U.S.-based structures suppliers to Airbus, which is jointly owned by EADS and BAE Systems. The A340-600 upper wing panels that Vought builds are among the longest in the world – measuring more than 100 feet in length.

"Our Nashville team has done a tremendous job designing and building large, high-quality wing components for Airbus," said Erich Smith, Vought’s Airbus general manager." It’s gratifying for us to mark this important centennial milestone and look forward to many more in the years to come."

The 100th shipset departed the Vought facility off Vultee Boulevard on Jan. 20 by trailer truck to Portsmouth, Va. The wing components are assembled into the wing box and transported by ship to Airbus in the United Kingdom. The wing box is then sent by air via the A300-600ST “Beluga” Super Transporter, to the Airbus assembly facility in Toulouse, France.

The A340-600 entered into service in August 2002 and is the longest Airbus airliner in operation. Passenger capacity of the A340-600 in a typical three-class configuration is 380 seats, while a two-class layout also is available that accommodates up to 419 passengers. Its range is 7,900 nautical miles.

Vought’s Nashville facility also supplies a variety of wing components for the Airbus A320 and A330 families of aircraft.
