DALLAS, SEPT. 21, 2005 - The employees of Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc. have demonstrated their compassion and caring by contributing to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
The company announced today that its employees have donated cash and checks totaling more than $12,500 for the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Many employees also made credit card donations to agencies through a "Katrina Relief" link placed on Vought's Intranet and Internet sites.
As area food banks were emptying their shelves to support hurricane evacuees, Vought employees took action by donating nearly 14,000 pounds in food to the North Texas Food Bank - equivalent to approximately 11,000 meals. Collection trucks took in bottled water, hand-held snacks, protein items and a variety of paper goods Sept. 7-9 at Vought's two main Dallas plants.
In addition, the company made an early-than-expected donation of $27,000 to the North Texas and Tarrant County food banks from Can Do! payroll deductions of Dallas employees. Vought's annual Can Do! campaign entails a number of fundraising activities to feed the hungry at holiday time. Since the can food drive began at the Dallas site in 1982, employees throughout the company have contributed the equivalent of 14 million cans to food banks and local agencies that provide meals and groceries to the needy.
Vought employees have first-hand experience in dealing with hurricanes. Last year, the company's operations in Stuart, Fla., sustained heavy damage due to hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. An 18-wheel truck from Vought's Georgia facility, loaded with medical supplies, water, ice, sleeping bags and non-perishable food, rolled into Stuart a few days after the hurricane. Employees from Dallas and Georgia were on-site to help with cleanup efforts in Stuart, forming a common bond to put the place back together.
"It's natural for our employees to lend a helping hand, given their own personal experiences," said Tom Stubbins, Vought vice president of human resources. "For a number of people, it may feel like payback time -- they've been the benefactor of help and now want to return the favor. For others, it's simply a matter of seeing an unmet need and doing whatever they can to make a difference."
