Vought Delivers 500th Set of Wing Panels for Airbus A320 Family Aircraft

NASHVILLE, APRIL 21, 2004 - Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc. has reached a major milestone by completing the 500th set of upper wing panel assemblies for the Airbus A320 Family.

Vought is one of the largest structures suppliers to Airbus, which is jointly owned by EADS and BAE Systems. The company's Nashville facility began working on the Airbus A320 Family in June 1997, making its first wing product delivery for that program in May 1998.

"It is a privilege for our employees to contribute to one of the most successful commercial aircraft programs in the world," said Vought President and CEO Tom Risley, noting Airbus' delivery of more than 2,100 aircraft since the program's inception. "With almost 1,000 more A320 Family airplanes on order, Vought will continue to be an integral part of the Airbus supply base for years to come."

The 500 th shipset departed the Vought facility off Vultee Boulevard on April 10 by trailer truck to Portsmouth, Va. The wing components are assembled into the wing box and transported by ship to Airbus in the United Kingdom. The wing box is then sent by air via the A300-600ST "Beluga" Super Transporter, to the Airbus factory in Toulouse, France, and assembled to the finished aircraft.

The single-aisle Airbus A320 Family of aircraft accommodates 100-to-220 passengers with a range of up to 3,700 nautical miles. Launched in 1984, the A320 entered airline service in April 1988 and rapidly established itself on short- and medium-haul routes.

Vought's Nashville facility also supplies a variety of wing components for the A330/A340 Family of widebody aircraft. The company's work on these Airbus programs fostered technical innovations in manufacturing such as low-voltage electromagnetic riveting and automated drill cells for composites. Deliveries for the A330/A340 Family began in 1990, with more than 500 wing components units shipped since then.
