Vought Wins USAF Contract for C-5 Galaxy Flight Control Surfaces

DALLAS, SEPT. 20, 2002 - Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc. announced today that it has received a contract valued at $65 million for manufacturing new flight control surfaces for the C-5 Galaxy aircraft. This Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contract was awarded by the U.S. Air Force Warner Robins Air Logistics Center to support the plan of operating the C-5 through 2040.

Assembly work under this contract will be conducted at Vought's facility in Dallas. The initial purchase order includes fabrication of new tooling to manufacture 22 first-article assemblies - consisting of wing flaps, slats (leading edge wing flaps) and elevators for the C-5 modernization program. Manufacturing will begin the second quarter of 2003, with initial deliveries scheduled from late 2003 through 2004. Subsequent orders will extend production deliveries through 2009, with an estimated contract value of $341 million.

"This contract builds upon our strategy of applying state-of-the-art manufacturing expertise to all our programs, including legacy aircraft," said Tom Risley, Vought's president and chief executive officer. "We are thrilled to play a role in extending the life of this proven, versatile airlifter."

The C-5 Galaxy is a heavy cargo transport designed to provide massive strategic airlift, for deployment and supply of combat and support forces. The C-5, in operation since 1970, can carry unusually large and heavy cargo for intercontinental ranges at jet speeds. It is the only aircraft that can transport any of the U.S. Army's combat equipment, including a 74-ton mobile bridge. The C-5 has a wingspan of more than 222 feet and is as high as a six-story building. Approximately 126 C-5s are still in service today.

In June, Vought signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company to manufacture wings for the P-3 Orion. In other military programs, Vought is a major subcontractor on the C-17 Globemaster III transport and the Global Hawk unmanned air vehicle. The company also produces components for the F-14, F/A-18E/F, F/A-22, E-8C, S-3, E-2C, V-22 and EA-6B.

Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc. (www.voughtaircraft.com) is the world's largest independent supplier of aerostructures. Headquartered in Dallas, the company provides wings, fuselage subassemblies, empennages, nacelles, thrust reversers and other components for prime manufacturers of aircraft.
