FIRST MARINE CARRIER_BASED PILOT TO DOWN JAP PLANE - Lieut. Col. William A. Millington, USMC, of Ruth Nev., describing his kill over Formosa to Rear Admiral Frederick Sherman, right foreground, commander of a U.S. Navy carrier Division. Col. Millington is the first Marine to shoot down an enemy plane when operating from a carrier. Leatherneck pilots, land-based in this war, had never flown as a unit from a carrier until Dec., 27, 1944, when Marine fighter squadrons were assigned to one of the Navy's big flattops. The squadrons are flying Vought Corsairs.
