MARINE CORSAIR PILOT BEATS ODDS ---- First Lieut. James E. Johnson, U.S.M.C., 205 Avery Drive, Kirkwood, St. Louis, Missouri, Marine fighter pilot, is shown alongside his battered plane after he landed it safely on Henderson Field, after a brush with Jap Zeros. Up with 31 Allied fighters to intercept 58 enemy planes bearing down on Guadalcanal, his rudder was shot away and also part of a wing. Three more Zeros joined, shooting away a tire and landing a shell in his motor. Yet not until he had maneuvered his plane into a spot where he shot down his fourth Zero, did he head for home.
