F4U-1D   SUN-UP TAKE-OFF: Engines roar as Chance Vought Corsairs are readied for a mission from a carrier's flight deck. This shot was taken just prior to a raid on Jap-held Formosa. Flying the fastest shipboard fighters in the world, Marine fliers first went aboard carriers on Dec. 27, 1944, drew their first blood on the initial strike against Formosa airfields. Since then they have taken part in attacks on Luzon, Jap shipping and the China Sea, Iwo Jima and the first carrier raid on Tokyo.
