F4U-1D CORSAIR GOES TO SEA - Wings folded, these F4U Vought Corsair U. S. Navy fighter planes are still in the process of finding their "sea-legs". One of the world's finest fighters, this inverted gull-winged brood until recently was land based. On December 27, 1944, however, two Marine squadrons and their deadly war-birds reported aboard one of the Navy's first line carriers. A "plane guard" destroyer steams into station abaft the carrier, while in the background a battleship of the North Carolina class may be seen.
