F4U-1 GOING BACK ------- Marine carrier - based Corsair fighters escort Avenger Torpedo Bombers on the strike against Formosa. This strike of January 3rd was the first in which Marine fliers fought from a carrier deck. When returning home, Marine Lieutenant Colonel William A. Millington, Jr., of Seattle, Washington, commanding the squadron, shot down a two engine Jap fighter and became the first Marine flier in history to shoot down an enemy while operating from a carrier.
