Materials Testing
Static and fatigue testing of coupons is an on-going operation in the Structures Test Laboratory. The static mechanical testing facility is equipped to perform nearly all material mechanical properties tests, including impact and creep, as well as a wide variety of structural element tests. Testing may be performed according to ASTM Standards, SACMA Test Methods, Military Specifications, or customer specified specifications. Universal static test machines are available in capacities up to 300 kips. Custom test stands are available or can be fabricated to perform testing up to one million pounds. Fatigue testing facilities consist of nine servo-hydraulic machines with capacities from 5.5 to 110 kips. Each fatigue test machine has a dedicated computer for test control and data acquisition. Fatigue tests may be performed under constant amplitude conditions or random spectrum loading. Cycling can be performed through load control, displacement or strain control feedback. Testing of fracture toughness (ASTM E399) and crack growth (ASTM E647) specimens are performed with computer monitoring and recording of the crack growth process. Environments for specimen conditioning and testing include humidity to 95% R.H. and temperatures from -400°F to 3,000°F.
Vought Test Operations staff have extensive experience in testing state-of-the-art materials and have developed proven testing performance in mechanical testing, low and high cycle fatigue testing, and impact testing.
